The deadline for Gwinnett County homeowners to apply for a homestead exemption to reduce their property taxes for the current year is April 1. Property owners with a homestead exemption already in place do not need to reapply.

Homeowners can qualify for a regular homestead exemption if they own and occupy the property as of January 1 of the application year. If homeowners occupy the property after January 1, the application, if approved, will be for the following year. There is no age or income limit for the regular homestead exemption.

Property owners 65 years or older as of January 1 of the application year who occupy the property as their primary residence may qualify for the Senior School Exemption, the State Senior School Exemption or the $20,000 Senior Exemption depending on their income.

Anyone 62 years or older as of January 1 of the application year who occupy the property as their primary residence may qualify for the Regular School Exemption or the Floating Homestead Exemption depending on their income.

There are also special homestead exemptions for disabled people, disabled military veterans, surviving spouses of military veterans and spouses of peace officers or firefighters killed in the line of duty.
