Buford senior Madison Pickens hit three home runs in the game against Cambridge on Monday, September 11 which Buford won 9-0 at the Buford Softball Complex. Prior to the game starting, the team honored Buford City Schools’ school resource officers.
The Wolves kicked off scoring in the first inning with a lead-off home run by Madison Pickens, her eighth home run of the season. Mackenzie Pickens and Adriana Martinez were both walked followed by a single from Caroline Stanton. A single from Tavye Borders allowed Mackenzie Pickens to score. Summer Castorri was up next and Borders was tagged out at second base, allowing Castorri to make it to first. During that time, the Bears made an error which Martinez and Stanton capitalized on putting Buford up 4-0. Two stolen bases and another error by Cambridge had Castorri running across home plate making the score 5-0 going into the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Buford would add two more runs with solo home runs from Madison Pickens and Martinez.
Izzy Rettiger started the bottom of the sixth inning with a single which was followed by Madison Pickens’ 10th home run of the season. Her two-run home run ended the game with Buford up 9-0 over Cambridge.
Senior Emma Grace Williams (5-0) pitched a complete game at six innings where she gave up four hits and no runs, struck out four and walked one.
Offensive standouts for the Wolves included Madison Pickens (3-for-4, three home runs, four RBIs, three runs scored), Borders (2-for-2, one RBI, two stolen bases), Rettiger (2-for-3, double, one run scored) and Martinez (1-for-2, solo home run, one RBI, two runs scored).
Buford’s overall season record improved to 13-0 and 4-0 in Region 8-AAAAAAA.
The Wolves play again on Tuesday, September 12 at 6 p.m. in a region match-up at Mountain View.
