The Buford High School chapter of DECA Inc. (formerly called Distributive Education Clubs of America) hosted the first annual Trunk or Treat at the high school on October 25, which benefitted the North Gwinnett Co-Op.

The event was a great way to bring the community together, as well as double as a collection event for the North Gwinnett Co-Op. DECA was collecting toiletry items and Buford spirit wear clothing to donate to the Co-Op.

Over 1,000 people showed up for the Trunk or Treat, which was primarily marketed towards Buford City Schools students at Buford Elementary School, Buford Academy, Buford Senior Academy and Buford Middle School.

In addition to DECA hosting a trunk, Buford High School clubs such as HOPE, NHS, FBLA, HOSA, BSU, BETA, and others also hosted trunks. Several high school athletic teams also got in on the trunk-hosting action. Those teams were men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s swimming. The National Art Honor Society put their artistic skills to work by providing face painting during the event.

“We definitely met our goal of bringing the community together for a fun event while helping to collect much-needed items for the North Gwinnett Co-Op,” said BHS DECA Advisor, Faith Davenport. “We look forward to hosting the Trunk or Treat again next year and making it even bigger and better than this year’s event.”

DECA collected 430 pounds of toiletry items and over 130 spirit wear items for the North Gwinnett Co-Op.

DECA is part of the Buford High School Career and Technical Education Department and its members are typically part of the education/teaching as a profession pathway offered as part of the CTE Department. Five clubs are part of the CTE Department in addition to DECA, including FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America), HOSA (Future Health Professionals) and Skills USA.
