A 23-year-old man drowned on Saturday, August 26 at a Lake Lanier park in Gwinnett County becoming the seventh person to lose their life on the lake this year.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call just after 3 p.m. about a possible drowning at Lanier Park near Buford.

Edgar Steven Cruz Martinez, 23 was swimming at the park when he went under the water and never resurfaced.

“Soon after arriving, game wardens were able to locate the deceased victim in approximately 10 feet of water with boat-mounted sonar. Gwinnett Fire used their rescue swimmers to recover the body,” said Mark McKinnon, public information officer with Georgia DNR Law Enforcement Division.
