In Buford’s 2024 home opener, senior shortstop Izzy Rettiger led the Lady Wolves’ offense in a 7-0 victory over Cambridge on Monday, August 19.
Rettiger was 4-for-4 against the Lady Bears hitting three single hits and a triple. She had one RBI, scored a run and stole one base during the game.
Buford added its first two runs in the first inning when a mistake by a Cambridge outfielder on a fly ball by junior Addie Rackley allowed Rettiger and junior Caroline Stanton to score.
In the bottom of the second inning, lead-off batter Janie Goldin got on base with a single hit. She added Buford’s third run of the night after she stole two bases and was assisted by one of Rettiger’s singles.
Cambridge had a pitcher change in the top of the fifth inning that proved to be a bad decision after they walked two Buford batters, had a wild pitch and allowed a double and a single hit. Senior Kylie Gower’s double drove in Stanton and a single hit by sophomore Ella Pierce Hensley was enough to bring Rackley home. Goldin’s ground out enabled the third and final run of the inning to give Buford a 6-0 lead over Cambridge.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, junior Summer Castorri scored the Lady Wolves’ seventh run thanks to a double by Rackley.
Stanton (2-0) had a great night on the mound for Buford pitching all seven innings and only allowing one hit, no runs and no walks while striking out 10.
In addition to Rettiger, other offensive standouts for Buford were Gower (1-for-3, double, one RBI, one run scored, one stolen base), Rackley (1-for-3, two doubles, one RBI, one run scored, one stolen base) and Goldin (1-for-3, one RBI, one run scored, two stolen bases).
Buford (3-0) begins Region 8-6A play on Tuesday, August 20 when they host Dacula. The game is set to begin at 5:55 p.m.
