Both the Lanier boys and girls basketball teams defeated Gainesville in the Region 8-6A tournament on Friday, Feb. 16 at Shiloh High School. Both teams will enter the state playoffs as the No. 3 seed from Region 8-6A.

Boys basketball

Lanier 57, Gainesville 56 OT

The Lanier boys basketball team defeated Gainesville 57-56 in overtime thanks to Amari Morgan making 1-of-2 foul shots with 3.5 seconds left in overtime.

Standouts for the Longhorns over the Red Elephants were senior Tahai Morgan (16 points, five rebounds), Amari Morgan (16 points, 10 rebounds), senior Dre Cowan (15 points, four rebounds) and Cameron Thornton (seven assists).

Lanier will face the No. 2 seed from Region 5 in the first round of the state playoffs.

Girls basketball

Lanier 52, Gainesville 45

The Lanier girls basketball team’s huge first quarter key to the Lady Longhorns’ 52-45 win over Gainesville in the Region 8-6A tournament on Friday.

Standouts for the Lady Longhorns were senior Asja Howell (18 points), sophomore Jordan Johnson (18 points) and senior Harmony Williams (six points).

The Lanier girls basketball team will play the No. 2 seed from Region 5 in the first round of the state playoffs.

Region 8-6A Awards

Lanier girls basketball head coach Jose Cardy was named the Region 8-6A Co-Coach of the Year.

Lanier’s Tahai Morgan, Amari Morgan, Asja Howell and Jordan Johnson were named to the All-Region Team. Tahai Morgan was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

DeAndre Cowan, Brandon Lanier, Oluwadamilare Falade and Vanessa Parent earned Honorable Mention.

Harmony Williams earned All-Region Defensive Team honors.
