Gwinnett County officials officially opened the new Ivy Creek Greenway Expansion during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, April 8 at George Pierce Park in Suwanee.

The new greenway expansion connects to several existing trails including the Suwanee Creek Greenway. The new section of the trail stretches from Westbrook Road into George Pierce Park.

“Projects like this expansion exemplify Gwinnett County’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all, fostering connections between neighborhoods and creating even more opportunities for recreation, relaxation and rejuvenation,” said Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “Our community is fortunate to have a well-maintained and safe place to engage in physical activity.”

According to Gwinnett County officials, features of the new 0.75-mile extension include “safety and connectivity amenities like 25 parking spaces, a bike repair station, benches for resting and bioretention features for sustainability and ecological balance along the trail.”

A special part of the greenway spanning 3/4 of a mile “features a 1,000-foot paved multi-use trail, a 1,500-foot concrete boardwalk with overlooks through the wetlands and a pedestrian bridge that spans Suwanee Creek.”

The new $3.7 million extension was paid for through the 2017 SPLOST program. Those funds were set aside as a part of the 2018 Gwinnett Countywide Trails Master Plan’s Ivy Creek Greenway.
