The Buford High School varsity wrestling team has racked up the miles and trophies during the month of December. They have traveled a total of 3,956 miles, earned three first-place team finishes, one second-place team finish, one third-place team finish, had fourteen individual champions and wrestled in five tournaments against 296 teams during December.
The varsity Wolves recently returned from the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Holiday Tournament held Dec. 27-28 in Vandalia, OH with the first-place team trophy and four individual champions.
Buford amassed 287.0 points putting them in first place ahead of Graham Local (281.0 points), Springboro (233.5 points), Legacy Christian (163.0 points) and Great Crossing (129.0 points).
Buford’s individual weight class champions in Ohio were DJ Clarke, Drew Gorman, Grayson Santee and Aaron Riner.
Clarke won the 113-pound weight class with a 5-1 decision over Eli Campbell of Legacy Christian.
Gorman got a 21-4 technical fall over Covington’s Chase Vanderhorst to claim the 138-pound championship.
Santee was able to capture the 165-pound championship with a pin on Bryce Kohler of Graham Local at the 3:04 mark. Santee won the tournament’s Most Pins in the Least Amount of Time Award.
Riner came out the victor in the 215-pound weight class with a 7-4 decision over Aidan Weimer of Springboro.
Buford’s other individual placers were Rylan Ibold, second place (120); Gavin Pope, second place (144); Conor McCloskey, second place (190); Tyson Matz, fifth place (106); and Callum McCormack, sixth place (157).
