A month ago, the Buford softball team won their second consecutive GHSA Class 7A State Championship, and since then, awards have been coming in for the team. The Georgia Dugout Club recently released their end-of-the-season awards and Buford picked up two awards.
Senior Madison Pickens received the Class 7A Player of the Year Award and head coach Trent Adams was named the Class 7A Coach of the Year.
Pickens is a four-year starter for the Wolves at the catcher position. She had a phenomenal senior season breaking several school records and was instrumental in Buford winning the state championship. In the semifinal game against East Coweta, Pickens would hit the game-winning run, her 19th home run of the season. The home run broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth inning, which was enough to give Buford the win and send them into the championship game.
The University of Louisville commit broke the single-season home run record held previously by Lexi Overstreet (2011) and Samantha Thomas (2015). Pickens ended the season with 20 home runs, which means she now holds the single-season home run record. She also broke the school records for the single-season batting average (.609), on-base percentage (.660), slugging percentage (1.402) and game-hitting streak (24 games).
Pickens ended the season with 56 hits, 20 home runs, 52 RBIs, 52 runs scored and 18 stolen bases. In 92 at-bats, she did not have a single strikeout.
Buford head coach Trent Adams is in his third season at the helm of the softball program. He previously served as an assistant coach under Tony Wolfe until his promotion in 2021. During the three years, Adams has been the head coach, the Buford varsity softball team has an overall record of 92-5-1 with two Class 7A state championships and two Region 8-7A titles.
