The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a statement on Friday that they are closing Buford Dam Park on Lake Lanier during the Labor Day weekend. The closure comes after a failed beach water test.

Routine water samplings revealed that the water at Buford Dam Park has high levels of E. coli bacteria that exceed levels deemed safe for swimming.

Higher levels of E. coli bacteria could put humans at risk of getting sick. Symptoms of an E. coli infection can include diarrhea, stomach pains and cramps, loss of appetite, low fever and urinary tract infections.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stated they are “erring on the side of caution and closing Buford Dam Park for the whole weekend.”

They will begin preliminary testing to reopen Buford Dam Park on Monday.
