Junior Summer Castorri blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning, which was one of the highlights of Buford’s 9-1 win over Region 8-6A opponent Mill Creek on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the Buford Softball Complex.
Lead-off batter, sophomore Brooklyn Atha was walked to begin the fifth inning. Senior Izzy Rettiger followed next with a single hit putting runners on first and second bases. Castorri then hits a three-run home run, her fifth of the season, over the left field wall driving in Atha and Rettiger making the score 7-0.
Mill Creek’s troubles in the inning were far from over as two batters later, junior Addie Rackley reached first base on a Mill Creek error. Following Rackley was junior Kadyn Gabrels who hit her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field invoking the run rule to end the game at 9-1 in favor of the Lady Wolves.
Buford initially got on the board in the first inning when junior Caroline Stanton hit a triple that allowed Rettiger to score. Gabrels would score Buford’s second run of the night thanks to a sac fly by sophomore Ella Pierce Hensley in the second inning.
Mill Creek scored their only run of the game in the top of the third inning. Buford answered back in the bottom of the inning adding two more runs courtesy of a bases-loaded line drive double by Rackley to make it 4-0.
Offensive standouts for Buford were Gabrels (2-for-3, two-run home run, two RBIs, one run scored), Castorri (1-for-2, three-run home run, three RBIs, one run scored), Rackley (1-for-3, double, two RBIs, one run scored) and Rettiger (2-for-2, three runs scored, one stolen base).
Stanton (5-1) recorded the win for Buford pitching a complete game where she gave up three hits and one run (unearned). During the win, she struck out four and walked two.
Buford’s overall season record improved to 12-1 and 6-0 in Region 8-6A. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Buford will honor the youth league softball teams before their home game with Walnut Grove. The game begins at 6:30 p.m.
