Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched at 10:24 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27 to a home on fire in the 3700 block of Martin Farm Road NW in Suwanee.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 10:30 p.m. and found a single-story home on a basement with a working fire. Crews immediately set to work using two hoses to knock back the flames while others did a search of the property and confirmed that everyone had made it out of the structure. The fire was brought under control by 10:49 p.m.

“One of the safety challenges crews encountered in this incident included a downed power line on the front corner of the house, which was marked and communicated to others operating on the scene,” Gwinnett County Fire Public Information Officer Ryan McGiboney said.

When firefighters spoke with one of the residents of the home, they told them that they were on the elevated back deck when they saw fire beneath them. The resident immediately alerted the other two occupants of the home and they all made it out of the home to safety before calling 911.

Firefighters on the scene determined that the cause of the fire was accidental and “related to disregarded smoking products.”

Georgia Power and Atlanta Gas Light made it to the home and secured the utilities. Three adults displaced by the fire declined assistance from the American Red Cross.
