A suspected armed robber is in jail after an officer with the Gwinnett County Police Department caught up to him walking along I-985 in Buford on Sept. 20.
Police were alerted to an armed robbery by a motorist who claimed her uncle had just been robbed at gunpoint while he was attempting to change a tire near the Buford Drive and I-985 ramp.
The victim told officers that a Hispanic male was walking past him on the side of the road when he stopped and asked for a ride. When the victim declined to give him a ride, the suspect allegedly “placed a gun on the victim’s lower back” according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.
The suspect then made the victim walk towards the tree line and ordered him to the ground. It was at that point the suspect stole a bank envelope containing a large amount of cash from the victim’s pocket. He then fled the scene on foot.
Officers responded to the scene and quickly set up a perimeter. An officer with the Crime Suppression Detail was helping establish the perimeter and saw a man who fit the robbery suspect’s description walking along the side of I-985 near the incident location. The officer stopped and detained the man. When the officer searched the man, a large amount of cash matching the amount the victim said was taken from him was found on the suspect. Officers confirmed that the cash belonged to the victim and returned it to him.
The Gwinnett County Police Department placed Johnny Roque, 28 of Sugar Hill under arrest and transported him to the Gwinnett County jail. He is being held without bail on a felony armed robbery charge.
