Buford’s softball team played their best game of the young 2024 season against their biggest Region 8-6A rival Mill Creek on Thursday, August 23 at Mill Creek. The Lady Wolves defeated the Lady Hawks 8-0.
Up first was Buford and they quickly got to work as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Izzy Rettiger was the first on base with a single and then she proceeded to steal second base. Junior Summer Castorri drove in Rettiger with a triple to give Buford their first run. Junior Addie Rackley and sophomore Ella Pierce Hensley each had single hits that allowed two more runs putting the Lady Wolves up 3-0 going into the bottom of the first inning.
An inning later, three Mill Creek errors and a stolen base brought sophomore Janie Goldin across home plate for Buford’s fourth run of the game.
The Lady Wolves were nowhere near done with the Lady Hawks as junior Caroline Stanton and Rackley hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the third inning giving Buford a 6-0 advantage over Mill Creek.
Buford would go on to add two more runs against Mill Creek in the sixth inning when Castorri hit her first home run of the season, a two run bomb over the center field wall. When all the dust settled, Buford came out with an 8-0 win over Mill Creek.
Stanton (3-0) was equally impressive as she was at bat on the pitcher’s mound. She pitched a complete game where she was zoned in striking out seven opponents while only letting them get one hit, no runs and no walks.
Offensive leaders for the Lady Wolves were Castorri (2-for-4, two run home run, triple, three RBIs, two runs scored), Rackley (3-for-3, solo home run, two RBIs, two runs scored), Rettiger (3-for-4, double, two runs scored, one stolen base) and Hensley (2-for-3, one RBI).
Buford’s overall season record improved to 5-0 and 2-0 in Region 8-6A. They take to the road on Friday, August 23 to take on Morgan County at North Oconee High School as part of the Warrior/Titan Tournament. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
