The Buford varsity baseball team opened their 2024 season with a 6-3 win over South Forsyth at home at Gerald McQuaig Field.

Junior Cannon Goldin, an Ole Miss commit, was the lead-off hitter for Buford and he got the Wolves on base with a single. He later scored thanks to a sacrifice fly by senior Madden Young, a single from senior Ethan Murray and an error from South Forsyth when they tricked to pick off a player at first base.

In the bottom of the second inning, senior Jayden Clark was walked, then he advanced to second base off of another South Forsyth error and made it into scoring position after fellow senior Sam Humphrey was walked. Murray, a Georgia Tech commit was hit by a pitch allowing Clark to add Buford’s second run of the game.

South Forsyth scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a double and a walk.

Buford added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Murray hit a three-run home run allowing junior Luke Hopper and Goldin to score. The Wolves were up 5-1 over the War Eagles going into the top of the fifth inning.

South Forsyth would score two runs in the top of the fifth inning from a combination of being hit by a pitch, being walked, a couple of fielder’s choice and a single hit.

Georgia commit Nate Taylor added Buford’s sixth and final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Neither team was able to add to their scores in the sixth and seventh innings. Buford would win 6-3 over South Forsyth to open their season.

Offensive standouts for the Wolves were Murray (2-for-2, three-run home run, four RBIs and one run scored) and Goldin (1-for-1, three walks, two runs scored and one stolen base).

Taylor was the winning pitcher for Buford where he pitched for two innings, gave up two hits, no runs, had three strikeouts and no walks. Earning the save was senior Damian Brown with 2.1 innings pitched. Brown gave up one hit, no runs, five strikeouts and no walks.

Buford will take to the road on Saturday, Feb. 17 to play Calhoun. The game starts at 1 p.m.
