The Buford boys and girls basketball teams captured the Region 8-7A titles after they defeated Mountain View and Mill Creek in the championship game on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
Boys basketball
Buford 64, Mountain View 52
In the championship game of the Region 8-7A tournament, the Buford boys basketball team beat Mountain View 64-52 to win the region championship. They will begin the GHSA Class 7A state playoffs as the No. 1 seed from Region 8-7A.
Buford got off to a slow start against Mountain View only scoring eight points in the first quarter. Mountain View scored 13 points during the first quarter. After that, Buford started making plays as they scored 17 points in the second quarter, 23 points in the third quarter and 16 points in the fourth quarter while Mountain View had 13 points in the second quarter, 15 points in the third quarter and 11 points in the fourth quarter. The Wolves wound up winning by 12 points.
Buford’s leaders on the offense were Asa Williams with 19 points, Jackson Houston with 14 points and Kyle Carpenter had 11 points.
Buford will face the No. 4 seed from Region 5-7A on Feb. 20 or 21 in the first round of the state playoffs.
Girls basketball
Buford 57, Mill Creek 40
The Buford girls basketball team defeated Mill Creek 57-40 on Tuesday night at Central Gwinnett to capture the Region 8-7A title. Buford will enter the GHSA Class 7A state playoffs as the No. 1 seed from Region 8-7A.
Scoring-wise, Buford had one of the most consistent games of the season. The Lady Wolves scored 15 points in the first quarter, 11 points in the second quarter, 16 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the fourth quarter.
After being held to just 16 points against Central Gwinnett, Ava Grace Watson bounced back and scored 30 points against Mill Creek. Half of her points came from three-pointers. Lydia Ledford was the next top scorer for Buford with 11 points.
The Lady Wolves will also face the No. 4 seed from Region 5-7A on Feb. 20 or 21 in the first round of the state playoffs.
