A High-Risk Arrest and Search Warrant was behind an officer-involved shooting incident involving a woman and Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT early Friday morning, Feb. 16.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., the Gwinnett PD SWAT Team was attempting to serve a High-Risk Arrest and Search Warrant at 2493 Buford Dam Road in Buford related to drug activity.
Gwinnett County Police said in a released statement on the incident, “As the officers were simultaneously making entry to multiple areas of the home, a female produced a firearm and began shooting at one of the SWAT officers. We believe she fired at least two times. The SWAT officer returned fire and struck the female multiple times. At least one of her injuries was to her torso.”
The officer that was fired upon was not hit by the gunfire. However, the officer did sustain a “minor non-life threatening injury” to his arm.
The woman involved in the shooting is believed to be the subject of the arrest warrant. She was taken out to an ambulance by SWAT Medics and transported to Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Lawrenceville with “very serious injuries.”
Officers said that there were eight people inside the home at the time of the incident. The seven individuals not involved with the shooting were immediately detained by police and it is unknown at this time if any of them had any active warrants. The seven detainees were transported away from the crime scene to be interviewed.
The Gwinnett County Police Department said that there have been “a few ordinance violation calls and area checks” for the property at 2493 Buford Dam Road in the last 10 months.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in by the Gwinnett County Police Department to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
