In the second game in a three-game series against Mill Creek, the Buford varsity baseball team wins with a final score of 3-0 on Wednesday, Mar. 20 at Gerald McQuaig Field.
Buford pitchers Braden Burton and Damian Brown combine their efforts to give Buford its first shutout of the season. Burton (2-0) pitched six innings where he gave up five hits and no runs, struck out five and walked one. Brown relieved Burton in the seventh inning and made quick work of Mill Creek putting them away 1-2-3.
Offensively, the Wolves were the first to score which came in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior Sam Humphrey hit a two-out single driving in sophomore Cam Wood. Buford added their second run in that inning off of an errant pick-off throw that allowed another Buford player to cross home plate to make the game 2-0 in favor of the Wolves.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Buford added its third and final run of the game. Sophomore Ayden Lockett got on base with an infield single and then stole second base. Lockett would go on to score the third and final run off of a double by senior Jayden Clark.
Buford’s offensive standouts against Mill Creek were Clark (2-for-3, double, one RBI, one run scored), senior Madden Young (2-for-3), Humphrey (1-for-3, game-winning hit, one RBI) and Lockett (1-for-2, one run scored, one stolen base).
Buford’s overall season record improved to 11-4 and 5-0 in Region 8-7A.
The Wolves will face the Hawks for the third and final game of the series on Thursday, Mar. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at Mill Creek.
